Shri Deep Joshi, Member NAC
Deep Joshi conceived the idea of setting up PRADAN (www.pradan.net) and was part of its institution building constellation until his retirement in 2007. PRADAN is an NGO dedicated to promoting rural livelihoods and presently works with about 225,000 families, about 60 percent of them from tribes, in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, MP, Orissa, Rajasthan and West Bengal. A distinctive feature of PRADAN is that it systematically inducts educated youth, including professionals, trains them in grassroots work and puts them to work in villages. PRADAN collaborates extensively with government agencies, from whom it mobilizes most of the finances needed for generating rural livelihoods.
Deep served PRADAN in various formal capacities, as its Executive Director for two five-year terms, as the director of its human resource development and as its director of finance. Prior to that Deep worked as a Programme Officer in the Ford Foundation, as a senior systems analyst at Systems Research Institute in Pune and as Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at NIIT Allahabad. Deep received a Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from MNNIT Allahabad, a Masters degree in mechanical engineering from MIT, USA and an MBA from the Sloan School of Management at MIT.
Deep was conferred the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2009 and the Padma Shree in 2010.
Deep is married to Sheela and they have two children, Uday and Girija. They have been living in South City, Gurgaon since 1996.
Deep was born and brought up in a small village in Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand, where he did all his schooling.
